With AMD recently launching new product offerings for the embedded market, including new Turion and Sempron CPUs, a new version of the 690 chipset, and what the company believes is the first discrete GPU in the form of the E2400, Taiwan-based IPC makers hold mixed views over the company's announcements.
The IPC makers who are positive over the new additions pointed out that AMD's embedded solutions can not only enable fanless designs on mini-ITX form factor boards, but they also have the advantage in graphics processing. AMD's Sempron and Turion processors are still very competitive in terms of power consumption, performance and price for handheld devices, tablet PCs, and portable PCs, they added.
However, some makers are disappointed that AMD ignored the widely used Geode segment, which has already caused some makers to consider turning to Intel's Menlow platform in order to fulfill demand for performance and power consumption. Others pointed out that the advantages AMD's embedded lineup offers in multi-display and 3D can be matched by combining Intel and Nvidia products. (Source: DIGITIMES)
