[Industrial Applications- COMPUTEX TAIPEI Review]Imaging is Everything to Vishay

To Vishay, one of the world's largest manufacturers of discrete semiconductors and passive components, imaging is everything in a trade show, including COMPUTEX TAIPEI.

'People might have a misconception that Vishay is a share holding company that buys and sells companies like commodities because over the years Vishay has acquired so many companies, small and large, including such top names as Siliconix, Telefunken, the infrared components business of Infineon, General Semiconductor, Dale, Draloric, Sprague, Vitramon, and Bccomponents,' said Scott Chiang, Director of Sales, Vishay (Taiwan) Ltd.

'Actually Vishay has never sold any of the companies after their acquisitions. Vishay acquired these companies to strategically broaden its product portfolio. Today Vishay has a diverse portfolio of semiconductor and passive components to provide 'one-stop shop' service and offer many different parts for each customer design,' said Chiang, adding 'Vishay found it more cost effective to acquire a leading company in a certain domain than to start from scratch.'

'Now our users cover a wide variety of markets, basically any appliances that need to be plugged into electrical sockets. Our potential customers include any companies involved in double E (electronic and electric) with design capabilities,' said Chiang.

In fact, Vishay has been promoting the Vishay brand name through advertisement and participation in trade shows. 'We want to tell our customers and the general public that Dale is Vishay, Siliconix is Vishay, General Semiconductor is Vishay, and so on. All these big names are no longer public listed companies, only Vishay is; and they have become business units or divisions under the umbrella of Vishay,' said Chiang.

'As far as Vishay's Taiwan sales office is concerned, we have 70% of orders coming from the PC industry. However, our focus in this year's COMPUTEX is to tell buyers that we are a global brand and have a rich portfolio of components related to ICT industry to provide solutions for their designs. For overseas buyers, we will tell them the contacts in their respective territories so that they can get more convenient services near them,' said Chiang. Vishay's global footprint includes manufacturing facilities in China and other Asian countries, Israel, Europe, and the Americas, as well as sales offices around the world.

'Therefore, our showground design and arrangement is to display all of our product lines and applications instead of only the major billing products in our Taiwan sales office. We will have brochures to tell visitors what solutions we have that can be applied to their respective designs and focuses. For example, we have components for energy-saving power supplies, for consumer products, such as cell phones, TV, PCs, for the industrial, for wireless access, for medical products, and so on,' said Chiang.
